The Firmness Scale: Plush vs Medium vs Firm
Mattress firmness is rated on a 1–10 industry scale, where 1 is a literal marshmallow and 10 is a hardwood floor. Almost no consumer mattress lives at those extremes. The labels you'll actually see map roughly like this:
- Plush (roughly 3–5): Soft, deep sink, lots of contour around your shoulders and hips.
- Medium (roughly 5–6): Noticeable give without losing support; a balanced, "in the middle" feel.
- Medium-Firm (roughly 6–7): The default most adults do well on. You sink a little, but the support layer still pushes back.
- Firm (roughly 7–9): Little to no sink, the mattress feels like a flat supportive platform under you.
Here's the catch: those numbers don't agree across brands. A "medium-firm" mattress at one brand can feel meaningfully softer or firmer than another brand's "medium-firm." The scale is consistent enough to talk about ranges, but not precise enough to compare exact model numbers across companies. This is one of the biggest reasons people get frustrated mattress shopping — the same word means different things in different stores.
The honest rule for most adults is simple: start at medium-firm and adjust from there. If you're a side sleeper with a lighter build, you may want to come down a touch softer. If you're a stomach sleeper or a heavier build, you'll usually want to come up firmer. The default is the default for a reason — it's where most bodies land.
Firmness by Sleep Position
Sleep position is the most reliable single signal for what firmness will feel right to you. Your spine needs to stay roughly aligned when you lie down, and the way a mattress gives under your shoulders and hips is what makes that possible.
- Side sleepers usually want medium to medium-firm. The mattress needs to let the shoulder and hip sink in enough that the spine stays neutral. Too firm and you'll feel pressure in the shoulder; too soft and your lower back will curve.
- Back sleepers usually do best on medium-firm to firm. You want enough give for the lumbar curve to fill in, but enough support under the hips and shoulders to keep the spine from collapsing.
- Stomach sleepers almost always need firm. Without firm support under the hips, the lower back bows and you'll wake up sore. This is the one position where most people genuinely need a flat, supportive surface.

Mattress Materials: What You're Actually Sleeping On
Most mattress marketing focuses on comfort and feel, but the real story is what's inside the bed. Almost every mattress you'll find in a store is one (or a combination) of four material families: memory foam, latex, innerspring coils, and hybrids (coil support cores topped with foam or latex). Each one has a distinct personality, and each one wears differently over time. The four sections below walk through them.
Memory Foam
Memory foam is the dense, contouring material that became famous for the "handprint" test — press your hand in and it holds the shape. Most modern memory foams are made from polyurethane with additives that give them their slow-response, body-hugging feel.
- Feel: Hugging, slow response, deep pressure relief. You sink in and the foam wraps around your shape rather than pushing back.
- Strengths: Excellent pressure relief (great for side sleepers with sharp shoulders), excellent motion isolation (great for couples — you don't feel each other roll over), quiet.
- Trade-offs: Sleeps warmer than other materials because the foam traps heat and there's little airflow. Can feel "stuck" for combination sleepers who change positions. Quality varies a lot — denser foams sleep cooler and last longer.
- Durability: ~7–8 years for most consumer memory foams. Lower-density foams soften and develop body impressions sooner; higher-density foams hold up closer to 10.
Best for: side sleepers, couples who don't want to feel each other move, anyone with sharp pressure points in shoulders or hips.
Latex
Latex is rubber foam — either natural (from rubber tree sap) or synthetic (made from petrochemicals), or a blend. It's been around for decades and has a very different feel than memory foam: bouncy, responsive, and cool.
- Feel: Bouncy and responsive. You push into the latex and it pushes back immediately, instead of letting you sink slowly. It feels more like "on" the mattress than "in" it.
- Strengths: Sleeps significantly cooler than memory foam (latex is breathable and aerated). Most durable of the common mattress materials. Naturally hypoallergenic. Good for combination sleepers because the bounce makes position changes easy.
- Trade-offs: Usually the most expensive category. Less motion isolation than memory foam (you'll feel a partner move a bit more). Less deep-pressure hugging than memory foam, which means some side sleepers with sharp pressure points don't get quite the same relief.
- Durability: Often 10+ years, sometimes longer. Latex is the longest-wearing common mattress material by a clear margin.
Best for: hot sleepers, stomach sleepers, combination sleepers, anyone who wants a mattress that won't sag for a decade.
Innerspring
Innerspring is the traditional mattress build — a core of steel coils with a thin comfort layer on top. It's been around the longest, and reasonable innersprings are still a totally honest choice, especially if you want a flatter, more "on top" feel.
- Feel: Bouncy, flat, supportive. Less sink than foam or latex; more of a "sleeping on" sensation. Coils let air move through the mattress, so it sleeps cool.
- Strengths: Lowest price on average of the four families. Sleeps cool. Easy to move around on. Familiar feel that mimics what most of us grew up sleeping on.
- Trade-offs: Less pressure relief — sharp shoulders and hips tend to feel the coils through the comfort layer. Edges tend to compress more when you sit on them (especially on older or cheaper innersprings). Motion transfer is higher than memory foam or latex.
- Durability: Coils themselves are durable, but the thin comfort layers on top tend to break down before the coils do. Quality varies widely — pocketed coils last noticeably longer than older continuous-coil designs.
Best for: budget shoppers, hot sleepers, anyone who wants a traditionally firm and flat sleeping surface, guest rooms.
Hybrids
Hybrids are the most common build at the mid-to-upper price tier today. A hybrid pairs a pocketed-coil support core (each spring wrapped in its own fabric pocket, so they move independently) with foam or latex comfort layers on top. The two systems do different jobs: the coils give you bounce, edge support, and airflow; the foam or latex gives you pressure relief on top.
- Feel: A balance — some give on top from the comfort layer, real pushback underneath from the coils. Most people describe hybrids as feeling "supportive but still soft where you land."
- Strengths: The most balanced default for most adults. Sleeps cooler than all-foam. Better edge support than innerspring. Better motion isolation than innerspring. Real choice in comfort feel (you can get a plush hybrid or a firm hybrid).
- Trade-offs: Heavier than all-foam (the coils add weight). Mid-to-upper price tier; the cheapest hybrids cut corners on either the coils or the foam. Quality ranges widely by coil count, coil gauge, and foam density.
- Durability: 7–10 years for well-built hybrids. Higher coil counts and denser foams push toward 10; cheaper builds trend toward 7.
The Nectar Premier Hybrid and Helix Midnight are both good examples of quality hybrid builds — pocketed coils underneath with foam comfort layers tuned for different feels. If you don't know what you want and you're shopping for one mattress for two sleepers with different preferences, a quality hybrid is usually the safest place to start.
How Materials Affect Durability
Materials don't just change how a mattress feels on day one — they change how it feels at year three, year five, year seven. A rough hierarchy, longest-wearing to shortest:
- Latex — typically the longest-wearing material, often 10+ years.
- High-density hybrid — 7–10 years for well-built units, longer for premium builds.
- Innerspring — coils themselves last, but the comfort layers on top often wear out first; overall lifespan depends on the comfort layer more than the coils.
- Memory foam — about 7–8 years for most consumer foams. Lower-density foams soften and develop body impressions sooner.
Warranties don't always track this. Most mattress warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship — a broken coil, a torn cover, a major split — but they don't cover normal softening. A mattress that sags half an inch might feel worn out to you and still be within "spec" as far as the warranty is concerned. The honest test is how your body feels, not the warranty card. If you wake up sore and it goes away once you're up and moving, the mattress is probably due — regardless of how old it is or what the paperwork says.
